Alicia Molik of Australia saved two match points before
beating fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4
Wednesday in the Moorilla International. Molik has ousted the
defending champion and two seeded players to reach the
semifinals Thursday, when she'll meet unseeded Iveta Benesova of
the Czech Republic. Benesova beat Shinobu Asagoe of Japan 6-3,
7-6 (4).
This again has been a very solid tournament for the start of
Vera's tennis career.. Good luck in Aussie Open '03'

Going strong down

Fifth-seeded
Vera Zvonareva of Russia defeated American Sarah Taylor today in
the Moorilla
International 2003... The score was a very convincing 6-2.
6-0... Vera has made a very positive start to 2003 and is
sending real alarming signs out to the very best of the game.
Zvonareva crushed American Sarah Taylor,
6-2, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in
as many events of the new season. The 18-year-old from Moscow
appeared in her first career WTA Tour final at Palermo last July
and reached the semifinals at Warsaw and Sopot.
Through
to round 2 in Hobart...
Fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia and Craybas, the eighth
seed, advanced to the second round Sunday, but sixth seed Rita
Grande of Italy was ousted. Zvonareva cruised past Sweden's Asa
Svensson, 6-2, 6-2; Craybas romped over Marta Marrero of Spain,
6-1, 6-1 and Grande lost to Germany's Angelika Roesch, 6-3, 3-6,
7-6 (7-4).
Vera is hoping on a successful year in 2003... If 2002 is
anything to go by we will be treated to some serious talent this
year...
